Boiled eggs

Ok so let's start right at the basics. Can you boil an egg? Surprisingly enough it's not as easy as it may seem and quite often you can get it wrong. So before you start to think this blog is for kids... think again!

Eggs are great, eggs are nutritious and eggs can be really really tasty. So here's one below that I did earlier. Depending on your taste you may wish to go with hard boiled or soft. I prefer soft but the trick to this is how do I know when it's ready before I go and overcook them?

It's all in the timing...

Get your pan and a couple of eggs.

Put enough cold water into the pan to cover the majority of the eggs but don't cover them completely. Just leave a tiny amount of them protruding out of the top of the water when placed on a flat level surface.

Turn on the cooker and select a medium heat. You don't want to turn this into a raging inferno in seconds, nor do you want to wait until several hours have passed before they are ready to eat. At this stage all you are wanting to do is start to warm up the water.

Some people have used devices like this one before which you put into the water as soon as turn on the cooker. They can be quite useful for when you first start out and get your confidence level up but in my personal opinion there's no substitute for timing and experience.

When the water gets to this stage you know you are nearly ready to start your timing... but not yet!

Get ready with a suitable timing device...

And when you see the water get like this, start the clock!

The trick now is to get the timing right so when you see the water bubbling away like this then you need to know at what point the texture and the taste inside are going to be right for you. The general rule of thumb is if you like your eggs soft boiled like me then allow around 3 - 4 minutes of cooking time but if you like them hard boiled then allow 6-7 minutes of cooking time.

The egg on the left was soft boiled, whereas the egg on the right was hard boiled. Note the consistency between the two. Now go and enjoy the fruits of your hard earned labour - not forgetting to turn off the cooker first! And just for the legal bit..... It'll be HOT!
